Six months ago, “add MCP support” was a Q4-roadmap line item. Today it’s the difference between your product appearing inside the AI clients your customers are already using and being a tab they have to remember to alt-tab to. Here’s what the actual decision looks like in 2026, with realistic timelines and tradeoffs for each path.
Step one: decide if you actually need it (you probably do)
Not every SaaS needs MCP support yet. Three filters worth applying.
If your product has no API — say, a pure-content publication or a no-code builder with no programmatic surface — there’s nothing yet to expose, and MCP is premature.
If your users don’t work in AI clients — your users are all on factory floors using barcode scanners, say — the channel doesn’t exist for them yet, and you can defer.
If your competitors haven’t shipped MCP either and you have no API-first competitor, you can probably wait six months.
If any of those three filters don’t apply, you’re already late. Every quarter you wait, a competitor’s tool gets recommended inside Claude when yours would have been a better fit.
The four approaches, ranked by realistic effort
1. Build it yourself, from the spec
You read the MCP specification, implement a JSON-RPC 2.0 server, define your tools by hand, wire up auth, write tests, ship it.
Realistic time-to-first-tool: 3–6 weeks for a competent backend engineer. Ongoing: 4–8 hours a month tracking spec revisions and patching.
This is the right path if your product has unusual auth requirements, you have spare engineering capacity, and you want full control over every byte on the wire. It’s the wrong path for almost everyone else.
2. Use an MCP SDK in your existing service
Anthropic publishes SDKs in Python, TypeScript, Go, and a few others. You pull the SDK into your existing API service, define tools as decorated functions, expose an MCP endpoint alongside your REST one.
Realistic time-to-first-tool: 3–10 days. Ongoing: every SDK upgrade is a small migration.
Best fit when your team already maintains the API service and wants tools co-located with the endpoints they wrap. Worst fit when the API service is owned by a team that doesn’t want a new responsibility.
3. Use a bridge plugin
This is the GetMCP path. You don’t touch your existing service at all. You import your API spec into a separate piece of software that generates the MCP surface, hosts the server, and forwards every call to your real API using credentials the user supplies.
Realistic time-to-first-tool: under an hour for a basic server, a day or two to polish tool descriptions for agent use. Ongoing: zero — protocol updates ship as plugin updates.
Best fit when you want MCP support without inviting it into your service codebase, and when speed-to-channel matters more than custom protocol behavior.
4. Wait and see
Defensible if you have a strong reason to believe MCP won’t be the dominant agent protocol by year-end. The data doesn’t support that bet anymore, but you know your market better than we do.
What a good MCP implementation actually looks like
The mistake most teams make on their first MCP server is treating it as a mirror of their REST API. Forty endpoints in, forty tools out. Which is technically a working MCP server and practically a bad one.
Three principles separate good MCP servers from mechanically generated ones.
Tools should be verbs the user thinks in, not endpoints the API exposes. A user thinks “create a project and add me to it.” A REST API has POST /projects and POST /projects/:id/members. The good MCP tool is create_project_with_owner, which calls both endpoints under the hood. Your AI client doesn’t need to know your API’s pagination scheme; it needs to be able to act.
Tool descriptions matter more than tool names. The model reads your tool’s description string to decide whether to call it. “Creates a task in the user’s default project and assigns it to a teammate of your choice” is more useful than “create_task — see API docs.” The descriptions are the actual interface; the names are barely.
Scope and rate-limit per tool, not per server. Some tools — search_customers, list_invoices — are safe and high-volume. Others — delete_account, issue_refund — should never be invoked without explicit confirmation. Modeling that distinction in your MCP layer is how you let the agent be useful without becoming dangerous.
The minimum-viable MCP server
If you’re starting from scratch, don’t ship forty tools on day one. Pick three.
A read tool that answers your most common support question — “what’s the status of my X?” — so the agent can resolve quick lookups without ever opening your app.
A create tool that performs your highest-volume write — create_task, send_message, add_to_cart — so the agent can take action on the user’s behalf for the most common workflow.
An inspection tool that returns the user’s account context — recent activity, current plan, whatever’s most useful — so the agent can ground subsequent calls in the right state.
Three tools, shipped well, will outperform thirty tools shipped mechanically. You can always add more once you have telemetry on what’s actually being called.
Common mistakes (we see all of these)
Exposing every endpoint. If you have admin endpoints that delete records or charge cards, scope them out of the MCP surface entirely. The agent doesn’t need access to everything your support team has access to.
Ignoring authentication. “We’ll add auth later” is a mistake. MCP supports bearer tokens, OAuth 2.1, and custom headers — pick one that maps cleanly to your existing system and require it from day one. Credential-passing should be end-to-end; the MCP server should never store user keys.
Bad tool names. do_thing, helper_v2, internal_xyz — these are real names we’ve seen in real servers. Your tool name is the first thing the model sees; treat it like a public API and version it accordingly.
No analytics. If you can’t see which tools are being called, by which clients, with what arguments and what success rate, you can’t improve the server. Build observability in before you ship, not after.
Shipping prompts and resources before tools are stable. Prompts call tools; resources reference tools. Add them in the second version, once your tool surface has stopped churning weekly.
